"Human" is the second single released by Daughter on their debut album If You Leave.
Reception[]
Critical Reception[]
Robin Smith of Pop Matters commented on the song, saying:
"The full-bodied, almost playful guitar strumming on “Human” recalls Sigur Rós’ elegiac “Gobbledigook”, another song that aimed to surprise an audience who expected the still, quiet beauty of an unyielding band. But we’re taught see the emotions of If You Leave as inescapable, and “Human” seems to exist so that Tonra can dispel herself. It ends hardened, the guitar vanishing under flustering piano notes that hold the album down, and the walls closing in on the space around her. “But”, Tonra reminds herself, suffocating, “I think I’m dying here”. It’s a crushing return to her sense of reality, but such is the inevitability of this album – Tonra wears her dependence, and her sacrifices, as a uniform."
Lyrics[]
Woken up like an animal
Teeth ready for sinking
My mind's lost in bleak visions
I've tried to escape but keep sinking
Limbs lost to a dead weight stake
Skull cage like a prison
And he's lost faith he'll ever see again
So may he once thought of me then
Underneath the skin there's a human
Buried deep within there's a human
And despite everything I'm still human
But I think I'm dying here
Woken up like an animal
I'm all ready for healing
My mind's lost with nightmares streaming
Woken up (kicking screaming)
Take me out of this place I'm in
Break me out of this shell-like case I'm in
Underneath the skin there's a human
Buried deep within there's a human
And despite everything I'm still human
I think that I'm still human
I think that I'm still human
I think that I'm still human
Underneath the skin there's a human
Buried deep within there's a human
And despite everything I'm still human
But I think I'm dying here
